Since the 1990s, there has been a rapid increase in the misuse of both prescription and non-prescription opioid, growing from less than 20,000 death in 1999 to more than five times that number in 2022 (NIH, https://nida.nih.gov/research-topics/trends-statistics/overdose-death-rates). According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), more than 760,000 people have died since 1999 from a drug overdose and nearly 75% of drug overdose deaths in 2020 involved an opioid (HHS, https://www.hhs.gov/opioids/statistics/index.html).
